Ransom Middle Schoolers in the Above and Beyond Students Summer Camp (also known as our Summer Enrichment Program) have traveled the globe, gone for gold, and picked up a few new life skills along the way — all without leaving Charlotte. Here’s a look at what they’ve been up to.
Around the World in 3 Days
Our students spent three days exploring China, Ghana, and the USA, learning about traditions, food, and daily life in each country. It’s the kind of learning that sticks: geography, culture, and history brought to life through hands-on activities.

The ABS Summer Olympics
Next up, our campers kicked off the ABS Summer Olympics. Students designed and made their own banners to represent one of four countries during the Opening Ceremonies: USA, Mexico, Norway, and Jamaica. Then, they competed head-to-head in a tug-of-war, a spoon-balancing relay, and an exciting lineup of other field games. Between the cheering, the teamwork, and the friendly rivalry, it was a reminder of how much confidence kids build when they’re given the chance to compete, collaborate, and celebrate each other’s wins.
Academics, Homemade Ice Cream, and a Trip to the Rink
Of course, our CMS middle schoolers kept building their reading and math skills throughout the program. But there was plenty of time for other exciting summer traditions, too. They learned how to make their own homemade ice cream from scratch, a sweet, hands-on activity the whole group enjoyed. Then, they rolled straight into summer fun with a field trip to Kate’s Skating Rink in Indian Trail.

Why This Summer Matters and How You Can Make an Impact for CMS Students
For many of our students, this program is more than fun. It’s a safe, structured place to learn, explore, and grow during the months when opportunities like this are often hardest to access. Since 1999, Above and Beyond Students has supported more than 9,000 Charlotte-Mecklenburg students at schools where 40% of kids qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Our six-week Summer Enrichment Program keeps that promise going — offering academic support, enrichment activities, meals, transportation, and field trips at no cost to families.
None of it happens without our generous sponsors.
We’re only two and a half weeks into our six-week program, so there’s still plenty of summer left — full of learning, laughter, and new experiences ahead. We’re not at the finish line yet, and that’s exactly why there’s still time to be part of the story. Get involved by donating, volunteering, or partnering with Above & Beyond Students today!
